Filmmaker Agnieszka Holland - whose films include 1993's The Secret Garden and last year's Green Border - has been chosen as Gazeta Wyborcza's Person of the Year, in recognition of "her artistic achievements and civic courage".

The timing of the award will be interpreted as an affirmation of her 2023 film Green Border urging greater compassion for refugees attempting to cross the Belarusian border into Poland.
The founding editor-in-chief of Gazeta Wyborcza and leading anti-communist dissident Adam Michnik presented the award.
