Lieutenant General Piotr Błazeusz, former First Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Army, has been appointed to lead the Eurocorps, Polish defence ministry spokesman Janusz Sejmej announced on Twitter.

The change in leadership comes after the dismissal of the previous commander, Lt. Gen. Jarosław Gromadziński, due to an ongoing investigation by the Polish Military Counterintelligence Service.

The defense ministry confirmed Gromadziński’s removal on Wednesday, citing concerns about his security clearance.

To ensure continuity, Błazeusz was appointed to the post, officials said.

Błazeusz brings extensive experience to the role, having served in various NATO structures and commanded the Polish contingent in Afghanistan, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The Eurocorps, comprising six framework nations and five associated countries, is a rapid response force for crisis, humanitarian, and peacekeeping missions.

It operates under the oversight of the constituent countries' defense and foreign ministers and plays a crucial role in both EU and NATO operations.
