Up to 5,000 traffic police officers will be deployed each day on Polish roads during the Easter holiday period to ensure road safety, police spokesperson Robert Opas from the National Police Traffic Bureau told state news agency PAP.

The operation will include officers from specialized SPEED units, tasked with curbing dangerous driving behaviors, particularly speeding.

Police will be checking drivers for sobriety, compliance with speed limits, use of seat belts, and proper child restraints. Officers will also monitor traffic flow on major roads and inspect vehicle technical conditions. In high-traffic areas, some officers may be manually directing traffic, Opas said.

Authorities urge drivers to inspect their vehicles and ensure they carry required safety equipment before traveling. “Spring weather brings more pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists to the roads. We remind drivers to exercise particular caution toward vulnerable road users,” Opas said, adding a special appeal to motorcyclists to obey traffic laws and speed limits.

The General Police Headquarters also reminded the public that restrictions on heavy vehicle movement—those over 12 tons—will be in effect on April 19 (18:00–22:00) and April 20–21 (08:00–22:00), excluding buses and certain transport vehicles.

During last year’s Easter holiday period, police recorded 225 road accidents, resulting in 30 fatalities and 254 injuries. Officers also detained 1,092 drunk drivers.
