According to Newsweek Polska, multiple controversies surrounding the presidential candidate supported by the former ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party have been exposed by audits from the Supreme Audit Office (NIK), ongoing prosecutor investigations, and critical court rulings.

Presidential candidate suspected of misusing public funds

Karol Nawrocki is accused of turning the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) into a political stronghold for former government affiliates, appointing figures like Agnieszka Kamińska (former head of Polish Radio) as director of the Central Przystanek Historia and Marcin Zarzecki (former president of the Polish National Foundation) as her deputy.

Nawrocki is also alleged to have mismanaged public funds totaling approximately 15.4 million PLN (3.7 million EUR or 3.9 million USD), according to auditors from the Supreme Audit Office (NIK). The Polish prosecutor's office has already launched an investigation into the matter.

Former employees compare Nawrocki's actions to communist-era methods

An anonymous source told the magazine that the PiS presidential candidate has used IPN as a "stepping stone" for his own political career. He has also faced criticism for retaliating against employees - such as issuing disciplinary dismissals to Agnieszka Łysakowska, Joanna Podpora, and Iwona Waligóra-Szwabowicz after they asked challenging questions - and for revoking blanket approvals for IPN staff to hold secondary academic positions.

"The measures used against us are no different from those employed by officials of the communist state," said former employees dismissed by Nawrocki from a local branch of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) in a statement to Newsweek.
