Mr Costa made this statement during a speech at the Jacques Delors Institute, at the same time as Donald Trump's new US security strategy against Europe was being published.

"The United States cannot decide who the good guys and who the bad guys are for European citizens," he said.

Although it is normal that the United States and the European Union do not share the same vision on many issues, "what we cannot accept is a threat of interference in the political life of Europe", Antonio Costa said. The concept of freedom of speech, for example, is different in the European Union and the United States, he added.

"There can be no freedom of expression without freedom of information... There can be no freedom of speech if the freedom of information of citizens is sacrificed in the service of techno-oligarchs in the United States!".

The Council also made significant progress on the 2024 Immigration and Asylum Package by approving the establishment of the first Common European List of Safe Countries of Origin. This will enable Member States to process international protection applications more quickly.
