Thousands of knights, reenactors, history buffs and ordinary spectators flocked to the fields of Grunwald, Warmia and Masuria in northern Poland, for the annual - the 22nd this year - staging of the Battle of Grunwald.

Fought on July 15, 1410 it was one of the biggest battles of medieval Europe, which saw the allied Polish and Lithuanian forces led by King Władysław Jagiełło pitched against the mighty Order of the Teutonic Knights.

Visiting knights this year included groups from Lithuania, Russia, Germany and even as far afield as the USA and Australia.

Participants in the battle are on horseback as well as on foot, sporting heavy armour and playing the parts of knights, squires and archers on both sides.

As well as the reenactment of the historic big battle, the programme of this year's festival headed "Grunwald Days" featured championship tournaments and swordfights, but also medieval markets and workshops in Gregorian chant.
