"We are celebrating yet another Easter holiday marred by difficulty and trouble," Morawiecki said in a video message posted on Facebook.

"First we confronted the coronavirus pandemic, and now we are dealing with the cruel war that Russia has declared on Ukraine and the whole free world," he added.

"Let this Easter become a spiritual source from which we will draw faith in a better tomorrow," he said in his Facebook video.

In a separate message on Twitter, Morawiecki said that "Easter is a time of joy which we traditionally spend with our families."

He added: "This year, after two years of lockdowns, we can finally celebrate together. We will be able to converse, reminisce and make plans for the future."

But "for many Polish families, due to unexpected guests, this Easter is particularly special because they welcomed families of war refugees from Ukraine into their homes," Morawiecki said in his Twitter message, as quoted in English by his office.

He added that "thousands of Poles were rushing to help, opening their hearts and homes" to Ukrainian refugees, "sharing what they have."

He predicted that "this extraordinary gift of solidarity will be remembered by Ukrainians for generations."

"I wish to extend a deep, humble and heartfelt thank you to all Poles," Morawiecki said.

He wished everyone "a healthy, happy and family-filled Easter."

He said: "May the risen Christ bring us love, hope and, above all, peace."

He also posted a tweet in which he said that "Easter is a time of hope" and "a time of rebirth of faith in the spirit of Christ."

He added: "I wish you that Easter will bring peace, joy and mutual kindness. To become a source of strength for your spirit. Have a blessed Easter."

Poland has taken in almost 2.8 million refugees fleeing Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Polish Border Guard agency reported on Saturday.
