Robert Opas from the National Police Headquarters (KGP) said on Wednesday that the death toll was down on the same period last year, but still high.

A total of 209 people have been killed and 3,105 injured in 2,661 road accidents since Polish schools closed for the summer in late June, he told reporters.

In the same period in 2021, there were 3,086 accidents, with 279 deaths and 3,587 people injured, according to Opas.

The most common causes of crashes include excessive speed, state news agency PAP reported.

At the start of this year, stricter traffic rules and tougher fines for drivers took effect in Poland as part of efforts to improve road safety.

Under the new rules, the maximum fine for traffic offenses went up from PLN 5,000 (EUR 1,065, USD 1,085) to PLN 30,000 (EUR 6,400, USD 6,500).

Drivers breaking the speed limit by more than 30 kph now face a fine of no less than PLN 800.
