Brig. Gen. Maciej Materka submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Thursday, according to officials.

Poland’s military counterintelligence ‘ready to face challenges’

In a statement posted on the SKW website, Materka thanked all soldiers, the agency’s military and civilian staff, officers and executives.

He also thanked Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak, Interior Minister Mariusz Kamiński and his own family.

The departing chief of Poland’s military counterintelligence service said that, after his tenure, the SKW was “ready to face current threats and challenges,” with “a notably enhanced role in allied operations and contribution to NATO.”

He added he would "remain active in the security field in the public sphere."

The spokesman for Poland’s security services, Stanisław Żaryn, confirmed the SKW chief’s resignation in a tweet on Friday, saying that the government would initiate “the usual procedures for such situations.”

“The agency will continue to perform national security functions,” Żaryn said.

Under Polish law, "the resignation of the head of military counterintelligence is accepted by the prime minister, at the request of the defence minister, after consultation with the president, top security officials and senior lawmakers," officials said.

Materka has previously worked for the interior ministry and served in various security roles, including at the Internal Security Agency (ABW), before being appointed to lead the SKW in January 2018, the PAP news agency reported.

Friday was day 240 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
