According to the state-run Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW), snowfall was the heaviest in the southern provinces of Śląskie and Małopolskie, in the central regions of Mazowieckie and Łódzkie, in the eastern provinces of Lubelskie and Podlaskie, and in the southeastern regions of Świętokrzyskie and Podkarpackie, the wp.pl website reported.

The IMGW on Monday issued a first-degree snowfall warning for the northern Pomorskie region and the northeastern Warmińsko-Mazurskie province, as well as a second-degree warning for the northwestern Zachodniopomorskie region, the northern parts of Mazowieckie and Podlaskie provinces, and the southwestern Sudety mountains, according to news outlets.

The warnings came after firefighters were called into action more than 600 times on Sunday alone to remove fallen trees or branches from streets, pavements and buildings, officials said.

Moreover, some 2,000 households were left without electricity in the Świętokrzyskie region, while supply stoppages were also expected in the southwestern Opolskie province, as snow-laden tree branches collapsed on electricity wires, breaking many of them, wp.pl reported.

Snowfall was forecast to continue, albeit in a less intense manner, on Monday night, according to the IMGW, with at least 3 to 5 centimetres of snow predicted to fall in most of the country. In the north, up to 10 centimetres of fresh snow was expected, and the northern Vistula Lagoon area could get up to 20 centimetres.
