"We must remember, for this is a terrible black hole in the history of civilisation" - Poland's Deputy Prime Minister Gliński's words as he lay a wreath by the plaque honouring the first transport of prisoners, in the former Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

"83 years have passed since the beginning of this criminal machine of death - the German Nazi concentration and death camp KL Auschwitz...":

Deputy Prime Minister Gliński perhaps also alluded to the Polish government's demands for reparations:

"Unfortunately the German nation as a community is responsible for these awful tragedies - it was Germany that determined the fate of the representatives of other nations."
