Poland's leaders convened as the National Security Council in Warsaw's Belweder palace on Wednesday.

The meeting was hosted by President Andrzej Duda and attended by Prime Minister Donald Tusk and the ministers of defence, foreign affairs, interior, security services and state assets, according to officials.

Also present were the Speakers of both houses of parliament, the leaders of parliamentary caucuses and the chief of the General Staff of the Polish Army, news outlets reported.

The head of state announced the meeting last week, after the new government under Donald Tusk was sworn into office.

In his opening remarks, the president said he hoped for "harmonious cooperation" with the new Cabinet "for the benefit of Poland" and national security.

He added that of key importance to Poland's national security was the upcoming NATO summit in Washington next year.

Duda stated Poland would seek to ensure that the summit decides to "strengthen NATO's eastern flank," including through a permanent and "strongest possible" presence of allied troops, especially US soldiers, on Polish soil.

The president also said the war in Ukraine had highlighted the need to "unify the command structures of the Polish army."

He added that a presidential bill to introduce these changes was ready and "hopefully parliament will consider it in the near future."

Wednesday is day 665 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
