The USD 2-billion loan will fund the modernization of the Polish army, including the purchase of Abrams tanks, F-35 aircraft, and Patriot missile systems.

"Poland is a steadfast U.S. ally, and this deal will further bolster NATO’s Eastern Flank," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stated in a press release.

"Poland is undertaking a significant military modernization program, which includes acquiring U.S. defense equipment such as F-35 aircraft, Patriot missile systems, and Abrams main battle tanks. Foreign Military Financing direct loans are a security cooperation tool reserved for some of our most important security cooperation partners," Miller said.

The U.S. government will also provide up to USD 60 million in foreign arms financing to cover interest costs on the loan.

Direct loans under the Foreign Military Financing facility are a security cooperation tool reserved for some of the U.S.'s most crucial partners. The modernization of the Polish army will significantly enhance the defense and deterrence capabilities of NATO's eastern flank, according to the announcement.
