Łukasz Dutkowiak, spokesperson for the Water Police in Wrocław, stated that officers were alerted to a man in a life jacket who was stuck on an island created by floodwaters in the village of Uraz in the Odra Valley. Although he needed help, he initially did not heed the officers' commands.
According to information shared by the authorities on the dolnoslaska.policja.gov portal, he quickly entered the water and was instantly swept away by the current. The police jumped in to help, collaborating with firefighters who had waders and the necessary equipment, ultimately rescuing him from the water.
At first, the man stated that he had slipped and fallen in, but when questioned about his presence on the island and the ownership of the boat, he was unable to give a reasonable answer. Meanwhile, officers from the Wrocław Water Police were alerted to a report of a stolen boat belonging to the Inland Navigation Technical School.
Polish police saved a man who was carried off by floodwaters, only to discover he was a boat thief facing a potential eight-year prison sentence.
The boat and its equipment, estimated to be worth 30,000 PLN (6,900 EUR), were returned to the owner after being towed. The 43-year-old later confessed to the theft and to damaging gutters at a nearby location. It was revealed that he had broken the gutters while trying to reach surveillance cameras that he also planned to vandalize.
Tomorrow, the man will be taken to the prosecutor's office to face charges of grand theft and property damage, which could result in a sentence of up to eight years in prison.
