A host of individuals, both lay and clergy, walked away with the Totus Tuus awards during a ceremony at the Royal Castle in Warsaw on Saturday afternoon, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
The statuettes are presented annually to people and institutions that contribute to building "a civilization of love" while being inspired by the teachings of St. John Paul II, according to the Dzieło Nowego Tysiąclecia (Work of the New Millennium) Foundation, which organises the annual event.
Sunday, October 13, marks Papal Day in Poland, an annual celebration to remember and explore the teachings of John Paul II, the late Polish-born pope who headed the Roman Catholic Church from 1978 to 2005.
John Paul II, who visited 129 countries during his long pontificate, served as pope from October 16, 1978 until his death on April 2, 2005.
He was the third longest-serving pontiff in history and was declared a saint in 2014.
