Polish authorities are prioritising the swift securing of these wrecks, Deputy Regional Policy Minister Jacek Karnowski has said.

His statement came after a Gdańsk-based research centre on Monday signed an agreement for the implementation of the Baltwreck project.

"For all of us—Poland, Sweden, Germany, Denmark and Lithuania—it is crucial that we act proactively to prevent environmental damage in the Baltic, rather than reacting after damage has occurred," Karnowski said.

State agencies and private companies throughout the Baltic Sea region have joined forces to collaborate on the Baltwreck project, which involves 14 partners and aims to develop advanced technologies for detecting and removing dangerous substances from the wrecks.

Radio Poland's Michał Owczarek has the story.
