A total of 1,164 fires were reported across the country during New Year's Eve and the early hours of New Year's Day, according to Karol Kierzkowski, spokesman for the State Fire Service.

In all, firefighters responded to 1,424 calls nationwide for fires and other emergencies during the night, marking a significant increase over the previous year, Kierzkowski said on Wednesday morning.

On the last night of 2023, Polish firefighters were called out to handle 777 emergencies, including 560 blazes, according to officials.

In the lead-up to New Year's Eve, fire and emergency services had urged the public to exercise caution when using fireworks to prevent injuries and accidents during the celebrations.
