Poland identifies Russia-led group seeking to influence elections: deputy PM

Poland has uncovered a group linked to the Russian military intelligence service GRU that spread disinformation in an attempt to influence Polish elections, a deputy prime minister announced on Friday.

"In recent days, we identified a Russian group inspired and prepared by GRU,” Deputy Prime Minister and Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski said, adding that its aim was to impact both the Polish political scene and the electoral process.

'Russia waging cyberwar against Poland'

When asked about the group’s composition, Gawkowski said: "It is a Russian group, but it can recruit individuals from various backgrounds."

He added: “Russia is waging a cyberwar against Poland, making us the most targeted country in the European Union.”

Gawkowski detailed ongoing efforts to secure Poland’s electoral systems, including safeguarding the National Electoral Commission’s infrastructure and countering disinformation campaigns.

Later this month, the government plans to unveil a comprehensive strategy for protecting the upcoming presidential election, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
