The Polish Senate on Monday confirmed the news of his passing.
Pastusiak was a senior politician with the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), as well as a historian and expert on American studies.
For 10 years, from 1991 to 2001, he was a member of parliament. Later, he became a senator and served as upper-house Speaker from 2001 to 2005.
Pastusiak wrote more than 20 books about the United States and American presidents, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
He also shared stories about US leaders with television viewers. He hosted his own program, titled "Presidential Anecdotes," on state broadcaster TVP.
In 2015, he was awarded the Commander’s Cross of the Polonia Restituta Order by President
Bronisław Komorowski.
