Nearly 2,200 organs were transplanted from deceased donors last year in Poland. This is a record increase, with 1,805 transplants performed in 2023 and 1,405 in 2022.
Professor Michał Grąt, a national consultant in the field of clinical transplantation, told Polish Radio that the statistics surrounding this complex surgical procedure are crucial for saving lives. "Almost 2,200 organs were transplanted last year, which represents a significant increase. We are no longer claiming that we have simply recovered from the crisis caused by the COVID pandemic; in fact, we have surpassed the number of transplants we performed before that period," Professor Grąt stated.
According to cardiac surgeon Professor Mariusz Kusmierczyk, organs from abroad can also be transplanted in Poland thanks to modern organ transport systems.
"We would like to take organs from other neighboring countries, as we have done now for a 14-year-old girl in Klaipėda. The heart was transported from Lithuania for over 7 hours, and this was possible thanks to the so-called beating heart transport system," Professor Kuśmierczyk explained. Until now, organs were transported on ice, and the time from collection to transplantation was a maximum of 4 hours.
