Speaking at a joint news conference in Warsaw, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his visiting Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau declared that the two NATO allies would work together on the peaceful use of nuclear power.
"I am convinced that thanks to our cooperation, various dimensions of nuclear cooperation, including small modular reactors (SMRs), will become a practical possibility," said Tusk.
"Our cooperation will focus on the peaceful use of nuclear energy," he added.
Tusk told reporters that Poland was ready to work with Canada in various technology sectors as it accelerated its economic and technological growth.
He announced: "Soon, I will share details on investment plans and partnerships with Canada and leading global companies, aiming to make Poland a leader in modern technologies and a model for Europe."
He described Canada as "a highly valued partner" and said he was confident that the two countries would "continue to strengthen this friendship and cooperation."
Trudeau said that Canada would "use its nuclear energy expertise to help Poland transition towards clean, reliable, and domestically sourced energy, phasing out coal from their national power grid."
During the meeting, Tusk and Trudeau also discussed a range of international security challenges, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
Trudeau on Monday attended an international event in southern Poland to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi German Auschwitz death camp.
During their previous meeting in Warsaw in February last year, the two countries' prime ministers said that Poland and Canada enjoyed a strong partnership and were aligned on key geopolitical issues, including Russia's war against Ukraine.
Tusk on Tuesday thanked Trudeau for Canada's "steadfast cooperation in supporting Ukraine" against Moscow's ongoing invasion.
He voiced confidence that Poland and Canada would continue their "joint efforts to uphold Ukraine’s independence."
