Speaking before flying to London for an informal meeting of European leaders on security and defense, Tusk acknowledged “complicated” relations with Washington and urged deeper cooperation among Europe, the West, and the United States.

Call for stronger European defense

Tusk welcomed Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s proposal for a U.S.-Europe summit on Ukraine, especially in light of the recent clash between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Polish leader said he would push for a bolstered “eastern flank,” including more European troops in Finland, the Baltic states, and along Poland’s border with Russia and Belarus.

“Today everyone is loudly saying: peace through strength,” Tusk added, emphasizing that a robust, well-armed Europe can deter aggression and help preserve Ukraine’s sovereignty.
