The attacker entered the examination room during a consultation and fatally assaulted the physician with a sharp object. Hospital security subdued the suspect - a 35-year-old man from the Jędrzejów district in south-central Poland - until police arrived.

Health Minister Leszczyna expressed condolences to the victim’s family, calling the attack “barbaric” and demanding the harshest punishment.

“There are no words to express my sorrow and anger over the death of the doctor from the University Clinical Hospital in Kraków - a death following a knife attack,” Leszczyna wrote on her profile on X (formerly Twitter).

“To the doctor’s family and colleagues, I extend my deepest sympathies. Violence against those who dedicate their lives to saving ours is an act of barbarism and must be met with the most severe punishment,” she added.

Authorities continue to investigate the scene and question the suspect.

The doctor who died on Tuesday was an orthopedic and trauma specialist focused on reconstructive surgery of the hand and foot. He was also active in medical education, organizing national and international conferences, and was known for his work in sports medicine and ultrasound diagnostics of the musculoskeletal system.
