The suspect, who has not been named, was brought to the District Prosecutor’s Office in Kraków-Podgórze, where he was questioned.
On Tuesday, the 35-year-old stormed into Dr. Tomasz Solecki’s consulting room, dissatisfied with his treatment, and stabbed him multiple times, according to reports.
Prosecutors requested a three-month pretrial detention order for the suspect, who has pleaded not guilty and refused to give explanations, spokeswoman Oliwia Bożek-Michalec said.
Given the violent nature of the crime, a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation, likely including in-custody observation, has been deemed necessary, Bożek-Michalec told a news conference.
A nurse who entered the treatment room to assist the doctor was not injured, reporters were told.
Earlier on Wednesday, hospitals across Poland observed a minute’s silence in memory of the slain doctor.
Meanwhile, Prison Service chief Andrzej Pecka offered to resign over the incident, and Prime Minister Donald Tusk accepted the resignation, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
