Poland is on course to become the world's 20th-largest economy this year, overtaking Switzerland, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Monday.

He added that Poland has already surpassed Japan in terms of GDP measured by purchasing power parity.

Speaking at a government deregulation conference in Warsaw, Tusk said that while Poland’s economic standing is improving, further advancement will require "incomparably greater and different kinds of effort," as the country can no longer rely on untapped reserves.

He told the gathering at the Warsaw Stock Exchange that innovation, a smart economy and deregulation, or cutting red tape, must go beyond "revolutionary ideas" and become a "fundamental change in philosophy."

"The quality of life for every Polish family must rise to a clearly higher level," Tusk said at the event, titled Deregulation: Removing Barriers, Making Life Easier.

Achieving that, he argued, requires boosting skills, increasing investment, improving business performance and innovation, and raising standards in higher education.
