15-year-old scout drowns during night swim challenge in western Poland

A teenager drowned while swimming across Lake Ośno near Wilcze in western Poland as part of a scouting badge challenge.

The incident occurred around 1 a.m. on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, July 24. The teenager was attempting to swim across the lake and light a campfire on the opposite shore.

Despite rescue efforts, firefighters recovered his body from the water at around 5:30 a.m. Eight fire units were involved in the search and recovery operation.

Two people have been detained in connection with the incident - the 21-year-old scout troop leader and a 19-year-old lifeguard.

Poland’s Education Minister Barbara Nowacka offered condolences to the boy’s family.
