Even before her Cabinet was sworn in last month, Ruginienė said she planned to make her first foreign visits as prime minister to Ukraine and Poland, calling both countries strategic partners of Vilnius.

On Monday, she travelled to Kyiv, where she met with President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss what she called Ukraine's most urgent needs.

“Only Ukraine’s victory can break the cycle of Russia's aggression and ensure real peace,” she wrote on X.

Ruginienė pledged in September to strengthen ties with Poland in defence and infrastructure during talks in Vilnius with visiting Polish President Karol Nawrocki.

“I assured the Polish president that my government will continue to strengthen cooperation with our closest neighbor at all levels, because history teaches us that only united can we be strong and counter all emerging threats,” she wrote in a Facebook post.

She said her talks with Nawrocki focused on security and defence funding, closer relations with the United States, increased support for Ukraine, and expanded cooperation with Nordic and Baltic countries.

Economic ties and joint infrastructure projects were also on the agenda, including the Rail Baltica rail project, the Via Baltica road link and the Harmony Link power connection.

In Warsaw, she is scheduled to meet Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Tuesday afternoon.
