According to his statement published on X, the new batch of howitzers has been allocated to the 16th Mechanized Division and the Rocket and Artillery Training Center in Toruń. “Another delivery of equipment for the Polish Army this week. Twenty-one K9 howitzers have gone to the 16th Mechanized Division and the Rocket and Artillery Training Center in Toruń. We now have over 200 K9 self-propelled howitzers. More will continue to be delivered to our units soon,” the minister wrote.
The K9 Thunder howitzer, produced by South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace, is set to become one of the cornerstone artillery systems of the Polish Army. Similar in appearance and performance to the domestically produced Krab howitzer, the K9 platform was initially ordered in 2022 to quickly reinforce Poland’s firepower amid Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The purchase also compensated for the substantial amount of Polish equipment transferred to support the Ukrainian military.
