Polish actress Joanna Szczepkowska, famous for announcing the end of communism in Poland on national television in 1989, has criticised right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) MPs for shouting “Down with communism!” during the election of Włodzimierz Czarzasty as speaker of the Sejm.

On 18 November, the MPs began leaving the chamber and chanting the slogan when Czarzasty, a former member of the communist-era party structures, was presented as a candidate.

Szczepkowska, posting on social media later the same day, described the protest as illogical.

“Where communism still rules, there is no parliament in which one can shout ‘Down with communism’. If you can, it means communism no longer exists,” she wrote, stressing that shouting such slogans in a democratic Poland distorts the reality of life under Soviet rule and misrepresents history for younger generations.

Szczepkowska also criticised PiS for hypocrisy, noting that the party includes many politicians with past ties to the former communist system, including officials, prosecutors and judges.

She emphasised that Czarzasty’s election was legitimate, taking place through free votes by elected representatives, unlike predetermined outcomes under the People’s Republic of Poland.

Commenting on broader parliamentary behaviour, Szczepkowska accused opposition MPs of disrupting government proceedings, including Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s address on acts of sabotage affecting national security.

“They sought to drown out important information about shared threats,” she wrote, arguing that their actions were motivated solely by partisan posturing rather than public interest.
