Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński confirmed on Tuesday, 16 December, that the Mazovia regional governor, Mariusz Frankowski, made the decision at the request of the National Prosecutor’s Office, which is investigating Ziobro over suspected misuse of public funds.

Zbigniew Ziobro, who has spent extended periods abroad in recent months, including in Budapest and, more recently, Brussels, has not publicly stated whether he intends to seek asylum in Hungary or return to Poland.

In November, prosecutors formally applied to invalidate both his regular and diplomatic passports.

Writing on X, Kierwiński said that “no one will escape responsibility,” underlining the government’s determination as the inquiry continues.

The investigation centres on allegations that competitions for multi-million-zloty grants from the Justice Fund were rigged while Ziobro oversaw the justice ministry, with prosecutors claiming that public money was improperly allocated to favoured entities.

The Warsaw-Mokotów district court is due to consider a request for Ziobro’s pre-trial detention on Monday, 22 December, shortly before the Christmas holidays.
