Poland's top diplomat said on Saturday that the country’s migration policy was working, after vandals splashed red paint on the Polish consulate in Brussels and scrawled slogans criticising Poland’s border controls.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski wrote on the X social media platform that the attack appeared to be directed at Poland's border barrier with Belarus and its efforts to curb irregular migration.

"Someone does not like the completed wall on the Polish-Belarusian border. That means our migration policy is effective," Sikorski wrote, thanking Poland’s Border Guard for "protecting Poland and Europe."

The vandalism occurred overnight into Friday at the consulate, located on a side street in Brussels’ Etterbeek district, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Red paint was poured over the entrance, the Polish national emblem above the doorway was damaged, and the word "killers" was written on a plaque identifying the building as a Polish diplomatic mission.

Graffiti on the facade also included vulgar slogans in Polish referring to the border wall, as well as messages attacking the EU’s Frontex border agency, and calling for open borders.

Some of the slogans were "written in broken English," officials said.

Belgian police have opened an investigation, Polish media reported, saying that security camera footage showed three or four masked individuals vandalising the building, while another person filmed the incident on a mobile phone.

The paint and graffiti have since been removed, according to reports.
