“Someone has to keep watch so that others can celebrate,” he said, urging citizens to remember those ensuring safety, order, and saving lives while many spend Christmas at home.

Tusk, accompanied by Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński, toured border posts in Ozierany Wielkie, in north-eastern Poland, meeting the personnel who will spend Christmas Eve and the festive days on duty.

The politician highlighted that more than 4,000 soldiers and several hundred police and border guards would be stationed along the borders with Belarus and Lithuania, totaling over 6,000 people.

“Thanks to them, the rest of us can safely celebrate the holidays at home,” Tusk said.

The Prime Minister also extended festive greetings, emphasising that the essence of Christmas - love, remembrance, and hope - applies to those on duty as well.

Kierwiński showcased one of five recently constructed observation towers, noting that it houses the first cluster of an anti-drone system, scheduled to be operational in January.

The minister outlined the government’s record investment in border security, including electronic and physical barriers, patrol roads, and infrastructure to support rapid response by security forces.

Kierwiński said that last year border guards prevented nearly 30,000 illegal crossings, describing it as part of a “hybrid war” being waged against Poland and the European Union by Russia and Belarus.
