The Weimar Triangle is a trilateral cooperation format bringing together Poland, Germany and France.

Poland’s Włodzimierz Czarzasty and Germany’s Julia Klöckner also addressed global security issues, including the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, during a video call last week, the statement said.

The two discussed the upcoming 35th anniversary of the 1991 Polish-German Treaty on Good Neighbourly Relations and Friendly Cooperation, including plans for joint commemorations.

Transatlantic relations were also on the agenda, with Czarzasty saying US policy has recently become less predictable and insufficiently coordinated with allies, according to his office.

He argued that Europe should strengthen its own capabilities in response.

"Europe must be strong and united because, in today’s changing world, we can above all count on ourselves," he was quoted as saying.

Czarzasty briefed Klöckner on Poland’s recent assistance to Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, while Klöckner shared details of her recent visit there.

They also discussed the impact of the Middle East conflict on the energy sector and ways to mitigate disruptions to fuel markets following the US-Israeli attack on Iran, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

It said both Czarzasty and Klöckner agreed that Poland and Germany should work together to ensure the conflict does not divert attention from Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The planned summit of parliamentary leaders from Poland, Germany and France is scheduled for the autumn.

The Weimar Triangle, established in 1991 by the foreign ministers of Poland, France and Germany, is a trilateral forum for political and economic cooperation among the three countries.
