The fire broke out overnight on April 12-13 on Morska Street in Słajszewo, Pomerania, about one kilometer from land designated for the nuclear plant. An asphalt paver, an excavator, a loader and two rollers were destroyed.

A fire investigation expert called to the scene the following day confirmed the preliminary finding of arson, said police spokeswoman Anetta Potrykus.

The machines had been working on a road upgrade being carried out under a cooperation agreement between state-owned nuclear developer Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) and the municipality of Choczewo, the village mayor Michał Milczarek told the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

Milczarek said the same weekend saw other incidents in the area, including a security guard booth being pelted with stones at the Biebrowski Canal and a portable toilet set alight on Morska Street.

PEJ said it was cooperating fully with investigators and would not comment on the cause of the fire pending their findings. The company added it was taking steps to limit any potential delays to the project, noting the road's importance to residents of the Choczewo area.
