Four agreements were signed on Monday between subsidiaries of Poland's state defence group PGZ and Hyundai Rotem.

They include a subcontracting deal covering production of the K2PL variant and an armoured recovery vehicle, two supply contracts between manufacturer Bumar-Łabędy and state-owned firms PCO and Wojskowe Zakłady Elektroniczne, and a service agreement covering the baseline K2GF models already in Polish service.

Hyundai Rotem will provide technical training and technology transfers to Polish facilities as part of the arrangements.

The contracts form part of a wider programme to establish domestic production of the K2PL variant, which Hyundai Rotem chief executive Yong-bae Lee said had been designed to meet Polish requirements and the demands of the future battlefield.

The first tanks are expected to enter service in late 2028.

Poland also aims to develop a European hub for the production and maintenance of K2 tanks.

Lee said Poland's flat plains and wetlands had already validated the tank's active suspension system.

Lessons from the war in Ukraine had also shaped the K2PL's design.

"Survivability has been enhanced against diverse future threats, through reinforced armour and the integration of a drone jamming system and a hard-kill active protection system," Lee added.

Further phases of the programme are planned, with Poland ultimately set to receive 1,000 K2 tanks in total, with more than 500 of them produced locally in the K2PL variant.

Poland first purchased 180 K2 tanks in 2022 to replace capabilities lost after donating armoured vehicles to Ukraine.

A second contract, signed in August 2025, covered a further 180 tanks and 81 support vehicles, including 64 in the K2PL configuration.
