Poland's Speaker of Parliament Włodzimierz Czarzasty visited Bratislava on Monday but deliberately avoided meeting Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico, who recently travelled to Moscow.

Czarzasty said the decision was intentional.

"If a politician from the democratic side doesn't have to meet with people who meet [Russian president Vladimir ed.] Putin, they shouldn't," he told Polish Radio.

Instead, he held talks with Slovak Parliament Speaker Richard Raszi at Bratislava Castle, where the two discussed reviving Visegrád Group cooperation, EU funds and the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine.

Czarzasty said meaningful Visegrád collaboration had only become possible following Péter Magyar's Tisza party winning Hungary's parliamentary elections.

"We didn't see much point in the Visegrád Group when the prime minister of one of its members was a friend of Putin, whom we consider an enemy," he said, referring to Viktor Orbán.

Raszi highlighted the bloc's collective weight – 65 million people, significant representation in the European Parliament, and 9 percent of EU GDP – saying its voice would be "difficult to ignore".

The two officials also agreed to explore inviting Ukrainian Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk to a future Visegrád session and discussed a scheme to host children of Ukrainian war veterans in Slovakia over the summer.

The Visegrád Group is a political and cultural alliance of four Central European countries – Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.

Slovakia takes over its presidency on 1 July.
