Ukraine's Institute of National Remembrance chief Oleksandr Alfiorov announced Thursday that authorities had approved exhumations at the sites of the former villages of Ostrivky and Volia Ostrivets'ka — now part of the rural Rivne municipality in Kovel district of Volhynia region — where residents were killed in August 1943.

The authorization also covers the site of the former village of Holosko Velyki, now Varshavska Street in Lviv, where Polish soldiers who died in 1939 are buried.

"The decision was adopted at a session of the State Inter-Agency Commission for the Commemoration of Participants of the Anti-Terrorist Operation, War Victims and Political Repression", Alfiorov wrote on Facebook.

He described the approvals as significant for Polish-Ukrainian relations and said they represent a continuation of a reciprocal framework for grave research permits on both sides of the border, a dialogue launched by the two governments in 2022 and furthered by Presidents Volodymyr Zelensky and Karol Nawrocki in December 2025.

"These decisions are of great importance for Polish-Ukrainian relations", Alfiorov said, thanking commission members for their support.
