Poland signs major contract for domestic anti-aircraft missiles

Poland has signed a major contract for Piorun anti-aircraft missiles, a domestically made weapon the defence minister says shows the country's growing strength as an arms producer.

The PLN 8 billion (EUR 1.85 billion) framework agreement, signed at the MESKO plant in Skarżysko-Kamienna, south-central Poland, covers several thousand launchers and missiles.

More than 80 percent of the order will go to Poland's own armed forces, with the rest supplied to Lithuania, Latvia and Norway.

Those deliveries are being made under SAFE, an EU loan instrument for joint defence procurement by allied states.

Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said the deal proves "Poland can be an exporter of military equipment and can be a leader not only in defence spending but also in production."

He added it was also the first agreement of its kind in which the consortium is made up of allied governments rather than companies.

Piorun is a very short-range air defence system used against low-flying threats such as aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and drones.

The deal, concluded between Poland's state Armaments Agency and MESKO S.A., also covers training and logistics packages.
