Ambros has Polish roots. His father was born in prewar Poland in what is now Lithuania's Vilnius region.
Ambros said during a visit to Poland in March that he was seeking to restore his Polish citizenship.
In an interview with Poland’s PAP news agency at the time, he said he wanted Polish citizenship to honour his Polish ancestors and contribute to Polish science and the country's international standing.
Tusk shared the news with Ambros during a video call, which the prime minister posted on his X account.
"I have great news for you: You're a Pole, with a Polish passport. You are a citizen of the country which is the best place on Earth. At least I believe that," Tusk said.
Ambros said he was honoured and thanked Tusk for personally calling him.
Ambros and Gary Ruvkun received the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery of microRNA and its role in gene regulation.
Ambros is an MIT graduate and has held academic positions at Harvard University and Dartmouth College. Since 2008, he has been affiliated with the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School.
