In the last week, Poland recorded nine attempts to illegally cross its border with Belarus, the authorities have said, as they continue to monitor migration flows along the country’s eastern and western borders.
In a summary posted on X, the Interior Ministry said nearly 200 foreign nationals had left Poland under administrative decisions, while more than 2,300 people were subject to checks on the legality of their stay. Nearly 900 foreign nationals also underwent checks to determine whether their employment in Poland was legal.
At the same time, authorities stepped up checks at Poland’s borders with Germany and Lithuania. Between September 11 and 17, almost 56,000 people and more than 27,700 vehicles were inspected, the ministry said.
Two people suspected of migrant smuggling were detained during the week.
Early July, Poland reinstated temporary border controls with Germany and Lithuania, citing the migration crisis. The controls have since been extended until October under the latest Interior Ministry regulation. Germany, meanwhile, has maintained controls on its border with Poland since October 2023.
According to the Border Guard, more than 31,800 people and 17,300 vehicles were checked at the Lithuanian border between September 11 and 17, with 16 people refused entry. At the German border, officers checked around 24,100 people and 10,500 vehicles, while 11 people were denied entry.
The Interior Ministry is now seeking to extend the temporary controls with Germany and Lithuania until April. A draft regulation was submitted last week. for public consultation.
The government says the extension is needed to curb what it describes as an uncontrolled flow of migrants.
