People from both the clergy and the laity received the awards during a ceremony at Warsaw's Royal Castle on Saturday, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

The statuettes are presented annually to people and institutions that contribute to building "a civilisation of love" inspired by the teachings of John Paul II, according to the Dzieło Nowego Tysiąclecia (Work of the New Millennium) Foundation, an NGO that organises the event.

On Sunday, Catholics in Poland marked Papal Day, an annual observance commemorating and promoting the teachings of John Paul II, who led the Roman Catholic Church from 1978 to 2005.

John Paul II visited 129 countries during his pontificate. He was the third-longest-serving pope in history and was declared a saint in 2014.
