The new minister replaces Elżbieta Witek, who was elected as Speaker of the lower house of parliament last week.

Kamiński takes on the new role while retaining his brief as Cabinet minister in charge of the country’s security services.

The appointment comes after Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki last week asked President Andrzej Duda to swear in Kamiński as the new interior and administration minister, according to the government spokesman.

Witek, a former government spokeswoman, was on Friday voted through as the new parliamentary Speaker after her predecessor, Marek Kuchciński, quit amid claims he used government planes for private trips.

Kuchciński said last week his decision to resign was prompted by “social expectations.” He insisted he had not broken the law.
