Meanwhile, officers stopped 1,844 drunk drivers during their Safe Weekend road safety campaign, which lasted from Wednesday to Sunday evening, according to Robert Opas from the National Police Headquarters (KGP).

Thursday, August 15, was a public holiday in Poland, marking the Catholic Feast of the Assumption and Armed Forces Day.

This year’s five-day August long weekend was safer than last year’s, when 43 people died and 547 were injured in 433 road accidents nationwide, Opas said, as cited by public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency.
