Officers stepped up safety checks during the break, especially on coaches carrying children to the mountains.

Many parents take their children skiing during this time, while others send their offspring on organized ski trips by coach.

A total of 2,899 road accidents took place during the school break, police said, citing preliminary data.

During the same period last year, 313 people were killed in 2,865 reported accidents.

The winter school vacation takes places at different dates in various regions of the country.

The first batch of children started their holidays on January 11 and the last batch on February 8. The holiday period ended on Sunday.
