Prof. Jacek Kubica from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, north-central Poland, which is carrying out the trials, said the research was focusing on heart drugs that could help in the early stages of the illness caused by the coronavirus.

He added: “We want to take advantage of the side effects (of such drugs) in order to prevent the virus from entering the cells of the body and multiplying in these cells.”

The drugs will be administered to more than 800 patients in the trials, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

A total of 17,469 people have tested positive for the COVID-19 disease in Poland, with 869 deaths from the coronavirus so far, officials said on Thursday morning.
