Wujec, who died on August 15 at the age of 79 after a long illness, was laid to rest at the Avenue of Honour in the Powązki Military Cemetery in the Polish capital.
President Andrzej Duda has posthumously awarded him the Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest state honour.
A pro-democracy activist, Wujec was repeatedly detained by Poland’s former communist regime, including when the country’s strongman leader Gen. Wojciech Jaruzelski imposed martial law on December 13, 1981 to stifle rising opposition, headed by the Solidarity movement.
After communism fell in Poland in 1989, Wujec became a member of parliament and an advisor to former President Bronisław Komorowski.
