Adam Niedzielski told reporters: “I think that there is a very high probability that we will have a vaccine in the spring, which will definitively end the pandemic."

Meanwhile, Polish experts announced on Friday that they have developed a “prototype” of a home-grown vaccine against the coronavirus.

The project is the work of a medical biology centre at the Poznań University of Medical Sciences in western Poland, state broadcaster TVP reported.

A total of 77,328 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in Poland since the start of the pandemic, and 2,270 have died from the COVID-19 respiratory disease so far, officials said on Friday.

The number of new virus cases rose by 757 from the previous day, while the death toll increased by 17, according to public health authorities.

On August 21, Poland's public health authorities reported a record daily rise of 903 new coronavirus infections nationwide, the most since the pandemic hit the country in early March.
