Double pay for Polish medical staff fighting epidemic

Poland’s health minister has decided that medical staff fighting the COVID-19 pandemic will receive double pay, including paramedics and diagnosticians in hospital laboratories.

Adam Niedzielski announced his decision on Sunday, and the pay rise came into force the same day.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki thanked medical staff for their efforts in battling the epidemic, which has seen a surge in infections in recent days.

“In these difficult days, the government is supporting doctors and all medical personnel fighting the coronavirus in a special way, including financially,” Morawiecki wrote on Twitter.

He added: “From today we are increasing their salaries by 100%. Nobody deserves it more than them.”

On Sunday, the health ministry confirmed 17,171 new coronavirus infections in Poland. The death toll rose by 152.

On Saturday, Poland reported a record rise in coronavirus infections for the fifth consecutive day, confirming 21,897 new cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country in early March.

On Thursday, Poland reported its highest daily toll of 301 deaths related to the coronavirus.
