Over 6.9 million jobs saved in Poland during pandemic: deputy PM

Poland’s government has spent tens of billions to save more than 6.9 million jobs since the coronavirus crisis hit the country a year ago, a deputy prime minister has said.

Support for businesses throughout the country has exceeded PLN 200 billion (EUR 44 billion, USD 52 billion) during the last 12 months, Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Gowin said in a Twitter post on Thursday.

Poland’s authorities in March last year unveiled a EUR 47 billion stimulus package to shield the country from the impact of an intensifying coronavirus outbreak.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in November pledged further billions in help for firms hit by coronavirus curbs amid a second wave of the pandemic.

A stimulus package known as Financial Shield 2.0 was expanded last month to cover a further nine industries, among them education, retail and entertainment.

Poland on Thursday reported 15,250 new coronavirus infections and 289 more deaths, bringing its total number of cases during the pandemic to 1,750,659 and fatalities to 44,649.

Poland's first case of coronavirus infection was reported on March 4, 2020.
