"The situation in Silesia is critical. Critical in terms of both the number of cases and the number of patients hospitalized," Adam Niedzielski told reporters.
Of the 32,874 new coronavirus infections reported across Poland on Wednesday, the most - 6,092 - were in Silesia, traditionally a coal mining region.
Niedzielski said officials believed that the main source of infections in the southern province was cross-border traffic.
He added that Poland planned to step up checks at its southern border with the Czech Republic during the Easter period.
